Sniper Rifle "Ruby" Customized Weapon (Fallout)
This is the weapon that my friend's character uses in Fallout, except the wood of the gun is made of redwood. I used this as a reference, and tweaked some things to better suit my friend's vision.

This is the 3D model of the gun. With the help of my boyfriend who works in visual effects, we took 3D assets straight from Fallout and mashed them together to form this model.

Using the model I 3D printed both the scope and the compensator. This is a progress picture of the scope, which had to be cut in half to fit on the print bed.

Removing the supports took ages and left my hands covered in tiny cuts. This is the first time I have used a 3D print for one of my prop builds, and I am hoping to learn better ways to work with 3D prints as I go on.

Overall I am pretty happy with how the print turned out. Besides the huge amount of sanding that had to be done, printing the scope (pictured here) and compensator saved me a lot of hassle.

Here are some of the measurements of the gun in centimetres for reference as I hand-draw the template for the gun.

I used the template to create the base shape of the gun out of EVA foam mats.

Tons of foam dust later, I have carved out the shape in more detail. I would like to personally thank my face mask and safety goggles for stopping me from turning completely into foam dust from the inside out. :)

I used purple paint to help me see what areas needed to be sanded down more to make sure that the shape flowed nicely.

Added a few detail pieces such as the trigger, magazine, and barrel. Nothing had been glued together at this point because I wanted to paint everything first.

Here are most of the pieces plastidipped. To get the wood grain, before plastidipping I made shallow slices with an exacto knife and blasted it with a heat gun, which opened the cuts.

Starting to lay down some base colors.

I was not happy with this base color of the wood because I wasn't sure if it read "redwood."

Thankfully it all came together when I added streaks of different shades of red, orange, and brown.

Here is a close up of the weathering. I put on a layer of black acrylic paint and then wiped/dabbed it off so that the paint was left in the areas that would collect dirt.

Finished! I am very happy with how this came out. Painting is my weak spot and I think this is the best paint work I have done. I will upload better pictures to showcase the gun in the future!
